| "When we started this band it was about the fun of playing music, and it still is!”, states Wil Musa, Arizona native and long time lead vocalist and guitar and chief songwriter. Daren Sweet, long time lead guitarist and vocalist and Arizona native had been playing in bands since he was 13 but had never found the right musicians that fit his style of music. A huge fan of a power pop sound, Sweet had a desire to create something he had been hearing in his head all his life. After bumming around with other local Tempe AZ bands, they found each other through a mutual friend who was in a band with both Musa and Sweet but at different times. “When I met Wil he came in with these great songs and I just added my guitar and harmonies to his stuff and it all fit together like it was meant to be”, says Sweet. With the love of a high energy guitar oriented sound filled with hooks and harmonies they became The Naked Choyas in early 1997. Soon they added the rhythm section of Rob Wienstock on bass and Jeff Kohout on drums and begin playing shows in the metro Phoenix area. The band had begun to record its critically acclaimed debut “Let’s Go!” in the summer of 1997 at Red Mountain Studios in Scottsdale AZ with Producer Steve Parrish at the helm. “Let’s Go!” was released in early 1998 and was a breath of fresh air from all the drudge and grunge that was still filling the airways at that time. “Let’s Go! was just a fun CD. Even when I hear it today you could tell it's four guys just playing music having the time of their life!”, says Sweet. With the one of the most rocking power pop anthems ever written, “Something to Believe In” as the signature song, “Let's Go!” sales skyrocketed locally and in various parts of the world. The song “Come See Me” was picked up by Master Source Publishing Company and placed on about 50 different TV shows and is still used today. “Let’s Go!” is still a wonderful debut from a band that had been around about 8 months before its release and it still sounds just a fresh today as it did then. After the success of the first CD the Choyas were set to follow it up with a new batch of songs. After recording a few songs at the Gin Blossoms Mayberry studio in Tempe, the band finished recording the second CD with Producer Steve Miller over at the Sound Lab Studio in Tempe, AZ. “Spitshine” was a harder rocking, more powerful sophomore effort. Though not as Power Pop as their previous release “Spitshine” more then satisfied the pop sweet tooth while opening up the band to a broader audience. Songs like “Domino Star” and "One In A Million" continued in bands tradition of rock and roll. “Spitshine had a different feel to it when we recorded it. “Wil’s songwriting had matured a bit and we had matured as a band”, said Sweet. Also making a difference was the powerful drumming of Kelly Stamps who had joined the band prior to recording “Spitshine”. The CD again was met with great acclaim and success. The band played out at the largest power pop music fest International Pop Overthrow out in LA while opening for such bands as Kenny Wayne Shepard, Lifehouse and The Tories (now Avion) here in the metro Phoenix area to support the CD. By 2003 the band took a break and long time bass player Rob Weinstock left the band to pursue magic full time in 2004. Daren and Wil have begun to write and record new songs or their third CD. “I think people will be surprised to hear the Naked Choyas new songs again, we are still such a good little rock and roll band”, said Spishock. The Naked Choyas still continue to do what they do best...ROCK!! |
